Another Quote…

Think there must be a conspiracy, commonprayer.net is coming up with lots of stuff to chew over at the moment. Today’s quote of interest is:

In his book Life Together, Dietrich Bonhoeffer says this to us: “Innumerable times a whole Christian community has broken down because it had sprung from a wish dream. The serious Christian, set down for the first time in a Christian community, is likely to bring with him a very definite idea of what Christian life together should be and to try to realize it. But God’s grace speedily shatters such dreams. By sheer grace, God will not permit us to live even for a brief period in a dream world. The sooner this shock of disillusionment comes to an individual and to a community, the better for both.”

It also links rather well with the quote that was shared on BarNone site about church. Which Reminds me of John Donne. Which is always good 😀 I love John Donne 😀 erhmm, yes, anyway he wrote a poem that I think captures some of the bewilderment we can face as Jesus followers when we look around at “the church”:

HOLY SONNETS.

XVIII.
Show me, dear Christ, thy spouse so bright and clear.
What! is it she which on the other shore
Goes richly painted? or which, robbed and tore,
Laments and mourns in Germany and here?
Sleeps she a thousand, then peeps up one year?
Is she self-truth, and errs? now new, now outwore?
Doth she, and did she, and shall she evermore
On one, on seven, or on no hill appear?
Dwells she with us, or like adventuring knights
First travel we to seek, and then make love?
Betray, kind husband, thy spouse to our sights,
And let mine amorous soul court thy mild dove,
Who is most true and pleasing to thee then
When she is embraced and open to most men.

And I love those last two lines.

Which links into the other post I’ve spotted on BarNone today about Leonard Cohen.

I’d never heard this song myself, so I’ve found a version on youtube and I love it. To me, it feels like a Psalm, someone longing for Shalom in all its multiple meanings. Or perhaps a more poetic way to ask, where can I go to meet with God?

For me, today’s answers were, doing jobs around the house. picking the abundant fruit and veg., playing with the pets, sitting on a beach with a friend and a fire, and in this beautiful song by this old dude with a crackly voice 😉
